Marcin Kuberna, artist, founder of Grôpk

KW: How did your journey with ceramics begin?

MK: I worked as a stylist for 12 years. During the pandemic, I lost my steady job and the occasional opportunities I had as a freelancer. Photoshoots simply stopped happening, and I felt the need to reassess my life. I still wanted to express myself creatively, to tell stories to the world through form and color. Ceramics had always fascinated me as a medium. I was enchanted by what artists could do with it. I decided to learn something new and signed up for a four-hour workshop to explore basic ceramic techniques. Right away, I felt a strong connection to the process of rolling clay. To my surprise, the clay listened to me, even though at the time I believed I had absolutely no manual dexterity. What I did have was a clear vision of the objects I wanted to create. I was searching for organic shapes with minimal technological influence. I wasn’t interested in the pottery wheel or casting. I wanted calmness and meditation, textures that brought to mind stones, bird or insect nests, or even the first forms of Neolithic production or ancient amphorae – basic in function, timeless in form.

KW: What started as a hobby quickly turned into something much more serious.

MK: My work took shape very quickly, and I received positive external reinforcement. Friends and family could see the potential in my creations. I began stepping out into the world, sharing my work, which was completely new to me. It gave me confidence, a kind of wind at my back. I became bolder – that hadn’t always matched my personality. Clients and media soon became interested in my story. I began exploring opportunities to test myself on the international stage. I sent my portfolio to 1000 VASES project, and I was accepted into this prestigious exhibition. My work was quickly sold, and I signed a contract with a gallery in Paris. Not long after, I showcased my work at Alcova gallery during Milan Design Week. Recognition at this level gave me the determination to focus on developing the Grôpk brand.

KW: What do you love about this work?

MK: That I work alone. No one tells me what to do, no one pulls me in their direction. I have complete control over what I create. On set, the final effect always came from a group’s compromise. My lifestyle has changed dramatically, too. I’ve found calmness and become more mindful. I don’t set an alarm, but I wake up early, well-rested. I make coffee and head straight to the studio.

KW: Has your style changed with this change in career?

MK: No, but I’ve rediscovered my joy in fashion. At one point, I had become oversaturated with it – I couldn’t even look at clothing anymore. Today, I find pleasure in tracking new trends on the runways. I dress the same way as before, usually jeans and a T-shirt when I’m in the studio. If I need a break, I put on a sweater or a puffer jacket and take a walk through the nearby Łazienki Królewskie park. I’m very active. I climb, and every free moment I have, I escape to a climbing wall or the mountains for hiking. Comfort is my priority. I don’t like drawing attention to myself. I prefer natural colours and timeless forms. I love knits because they, like my ceramics, carry the trace of human hands; you can clearly see their texture. I like soft, pliable, cozy things.
